SFIFF 2013, and an echo from last year

Today marks the beginning of the on-film portion of this year's San Francisco International Film Festival, a modest enough roster this go-around that I thought I'd be able to watch every single film. But I've been called upon to work the booth, so some will be seen only in snatches through the projection port.

I've seen Marketa Lazarová and The Insider before, but both could use a refresher, particularly the former; though Michael Mann is certainly a director of interest, my lack of recall of his Russell Crowe vehicle might drop this one to lesser-work status.

Of the new films, only Outrage Beyond is indicated as shot-on-film (with a digital intermediate) on imdb but I strongly suspect The Last Step to be film-originated, hopefully with no DI. And the 5-year old Helsinki, Forever is, as I understand it, largely constructed from old footage captured on film.

Multiple exposure by Jerry Hiler
Those who missed last year's festival screening of Jerry Hiler's Words of Mercury, or saw it only in its video version, will have a second chance on May 2 when it screens in 16mm at MOMA as part of a Cinematheque Dorsky/Hiler program. However, fate has put it up against a rare screening at the Castro of Nicolas Roeg's Performance, so your loyalties will be tested.
