Near Dark (1987) by Kathryn Bigelow 94 min. Color 35mm
This punk-inflected vampire-western single-handedly restored the vampire film to the realm of critical respectability. For once, the critics were right: Near Dark is a soulful saga of vampires as the ultimate outsider-outlaws unleashed in the American Southwest. Adrian Pasdar stars as a cowboy recruited by a kiss and a bite from beautiful Jenny Wright to a vampire crew that includes Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, and legendary bad boy Bill Paxton. Near Dark was the first masterpiece by San Francisco Art Institute graduate Kathryn Bigelow, who'd go on to become the first woman to be awarded the Oscar for Best Director. Soundtrack by Tangerine Dream!
